It is being reported over Twitter that Dodgers superstar prospect outfielder Yasiel Puig has been optioned to Double-A Chattanooga and shortstop Dee Gordon to Triple-A Albuquerque.
While this news shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, it is undoubted disappointing for Dodger fans everywhere.
In his team-leading 26 spring training games, Puig put up superhuman numbers collecting 30 hits in 56 at-bats (.526). He scored 16 runs, had 5 doubles, 2 triples and 3 home runs while knocking in 11 runs. His OBP, SLG and OPS were off the charts at .508, .842 and 1.351 respectively.
Gordon had an unimpressive spring with the Big club going 7 for 34 (.206) with 9 runs, no doubles, triples or home runs and only one RBI. He did managed to steal a team-high 7 bases – four more than Puig. Gordon clearly missed a golden opportunity to take over the starting shortstop position when Hanley Ramirez went down with a serious hand injury he suffered while playing in the WBC, but Dee’s low production numbers have all but guaranteed the starting shortstop job to Luis Cruz, who is tied with Alex Castellanos with a team-leading four home runs.
I’m sure that much will be written over the next few days about the Puig and Gordon demotions, but it is what it is.
Neither is a surprise.
I had hoped Dee would have earned a spot with Ramirez on the DL. He didn’t.
As for Puig – you know.
Puig will be back at some point this year. Gordon might just be trade bait now !!
