Although it should come as no surprise to anyone, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly confirmed on Friday afternoon that health-troubled lefty Ted Lilly has been completely shut down for the remainder of the season and will most likely face off-season surgery on his left shoulder.
Lilly, who has been on the disabled list since May 28 with left shoulder inflammation, has been fighting since then to return to the rotation but encountered a series of setbacks throughout his rehab assignments that included neck and back issues. It is his shoulder, however, that is forcing his complete shut down.
To this point, Lilly’s treatment included anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy and limited innings during rehab assignments but he frequently encountered pain after each assignment which delayed his return to the Dodgers. Mattingly confirmed on Friday that shoulder surgery is now likely for Lilly, who turns 37 in January.
“Up to this point surgery was never even mentioned with Teddy,” Mattingly said. “But he wasn’t getting better and it now looks like (surgery is) going to happen.”
Lilly has one year remaining on his 3-year/ $33 million contract and is due to receive $12 million in 2013.
I would think that if the surgery shows very much damage we have seen the last of Mr. Lilly !!
