Down on the Farm – Pederson Promoted to Double-A for Southern League Playoffs

Although it may be too little too late, Quakes star outfielder and top Dodgers prospect Joc Pederson was promoted to the Chattanooga Lookouts prior to Friday’s Southern League (North) playoff game. The move came as a result of Lookouts right fielder Blake Smith being placed on the 7-day DL.

In spite of Pederson going 1 for 4 in his Double-A debut, the Lookouts lost 7-3 to the Jackson Generals (Mariners) and are now one game away from elimination in the best of five series. The good news is that the Lookouts will be playing Saturday night’s game in front of their home crowd at AT&T Field in Chattanooga.

Pederson, who received the prestigious Dodger Pride Award in consecutive months (July and August) with the Quakes, finished the 2012 season hitting .313 with 26 doubles, 4 triples, 18 home runs (including 3 in one game on July 1), 70 RBIs, and an excellent .396 OBP and .913 OPS.

The 20-year-old Palo Alto native and son of former Dodgers draft pick and major leaguer Stu Pederson was recently named to represent the Dodgers in the Arizona Fall League, along with Quakes outfielder and Cuban superstar Yasiel Puig and right-handed closer Eric Eadington. Quakes pitching coach and former Dodgers reliever Matt Herges will join his players as the pitching coach for the Mesa Solar Sox of the AFL.

Although the Lookouts find themselves on the brink of elimination heading into Saturday night’s game, if Joc Pederson has anything to do with it, the Lookouts may very well live to fight another day.

GO JOC!

GO LOOKOUTS!

  1. CRANBROOK MIKE says:

When do you figure he will get his shot at the bigs?

    • Ron Cervenka says:

That’s the $64 thousand dollar question, Mike – or perhaps I should say the $409 million dollar question.

With Matt Kemp locked up for 8 years (at $160M), Andre Ethier locked up for 5 years (at $85M), Carl Crawford locked up for 6 years (at $122M), and Yasiel Puig signed for 7 years (at $42M), where does Joc Pederson fit in?

My guess is that Joc is still two years away from the Bigs (he’s only 20 years old), but unfortunately he will probably end up being used as a trading chip – a very big trading chip, mind you.
