A four-run seventh inning helped the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes to an exciting 9-8 come from behind win over the Stockton Ports (Athletics) on Tuesday night at the Epicenter. It was the third straight win for the Quakes, who are desperately trying to capture a Wild Card berth in the Cal League playoffs.

Rehabbing Dodger Ted Lilly started the game and threw a perfect one inning striking out two. Lilly was replaced by right hander Angel Sanchez, who lasted only one inning after being roughed up for 7 runs on 7 hits and allowing a walk and a home run. Jordan Roberts replaced Sanchez giving up 1 run on 4 hits in his four innings of relief.

Rehabbing Dodger left-hander Ted Lilly pitched a perfect inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

From there, the Quakes bullpen was brilliant with right-hander Ryan O’Sullivan, lefty Michael Thomas, and right-hander Brett Montgomery shutting out the Ports in the final three innings, in spite of allowing the Ports to put runners on base in all but one inning. Yimi Garcia was brought in with two outs in the top of the 9th and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. He then got Ports second baseman Michael Gilmartin to strike out swinging, thus earning his first save since his recent promotion from Great Lakes. O’Sullivan earned the win and is now 3-2 with the Quakes.

Trailing 8-5 with two outs in the bottom of the 7th, Quakes center fielder Joc Pederson hit his second solo home run of the night and his 15th of the season. Pederson was 3 for 3 on the night. The Quakes then loaded the bases bringing catcher Chris O’Brien to the plate who promptly laced a triple to right field tying the game at 8-8. Moments later Quakes first baseman Chris Jacobs ripped a single to right field scoring O’Brien with the eventual game-winning run.

With 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, Joc Pederson connected for his second home run of the night and 15th on the season. Pederson’s home run ignited a four-run rally that led to a 9-8 win over the Ports.

The night also featured the much anticipated debut of highly touted Cuban outfielder Yasiel Puig as the Quakes Designated Hitter. Puig went 1 for 4 on the night with a single during the big 7th inning. He got away with a huge base running gaff when he was picked off first base but ran full speed into second base and slid in safely under the tag. Puig then stole third base moments later.
