The Dodgers aren’t the only team with a 4-game winning streak right now. The organization’s Advanced Single-A affiliate Rancho Cucamonga Quakes are following in their parent team’s footsteps as they, too, have won four straight.
In what has seemingly become a pattern (and a very good one to have), the Quakes won their fourth consecutive game with yet another walk-off hit, beating the Stockton Ports 7-6 in a thriller before the hometown crowd at the Epicenter.
With the help of second-inning home runs by Chris O’Brien and Pedro Baez and behind an outstanding pitching performance by left-hander Jarret Martin making his Cal League debut, the Quakes took an early 3-0 lead. Martin, pitching one day after his 23rd birthday, allowed no runs and only one hit in his three innings of work. The Bakersfield native struck out two while allowing only one walk.
Martin was relieved by Quakes right-hander Brandon Martinez who didn’t fair so well, allowing 6 runs on 9 hits – including a pair of monster home runs to Ports Designated Hitter A.J. Kirby-Jones (one of which probably still hasn’t landed). Martinez was replaced by right-hander Eammon Portice who held the Ports scoreless, in spite of allowing runners to reach third base in each of his two innings of work.
With the game tied at 6 heading into the bottom of the 9th, things didn’t look too promising for the Quakes as Ports closer Zach Thornton quickly struck out Jonathan Garcia and Baez. Just when it appeared that the game might be headed to extra-innings, Quakes shortstop Casio Grider looped a double down the left field line allowing the Quakes best hitter, Joc Pederson, to come to the plate. Pederson again came through in the clutch drilling the very first pitch to left field allowing Grider to score the winning run. It was the fifth walk-off win for the Quakes this season and the second in as many weeks for Pederson.
Yasiel Puig played right field for the Quakes and went 2 for 4 on the night with two singles. He also made several nice defensive plays and stole third base for the second consecutive night, this time without a throw. Although the highly touted Cuban outfielder has yet to collect an extra base hit with the Quakes, it is only a matter of time as he is hitting the ball extremely hard in nearly every at bat. Puig is 3 for 8 (.375) in his first two games with the Quakes.
Even though the Quakes have won four straight, they cannot let up, not even a little, as they are still two games back of the Lancaster JetHawks and three games back of the Lake Elsinore Storm in the Cal League Wild Card standings – both of whom also won on Wednesday night.
