During Monday night’s post game interview, Dodger manager Don Mattingly said that a decision has not yet been made on whether or not Chad Billingsley would pitch on Tuesday night; however, he immediately followed that up by saying that he doubts that he will. When reporters met Billingsley at his locker, Chad was visibly upset and declined to comment.
Every indication is that Billingsley will be placed on the 15-day DL (retroactive to July 8) and that it will be Stephen Fife who will be called up from Albuquerque to make a spot start on Tuesday. The decision to choose Fife over staff ace and Isotopes All-Star John Ely is a simple one – Fife is already on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster and Ely is not.
With regards to Monday night’s loss to the Phillies, Mattingly said that his team “played their style of baseball tonight,” adding that the error and run-down mishap did not hurt them.
Nathan Eovaldi told reporters that he thought that he pitched well (and he did), adding that he tried to come inside on Jimmy Rollins but his fastball trailed back out over the middle of the plate and Rollins didn’t miss it. Eovaldi said that he threw a good change-up to Ryan Howard but Ryan “…is a good hitter” and took the pitch to deep left field.
