Dodgers utility infielder Justin Sellers has been placed on the 15-day disabled list for a bulging disc in his lower back that is causing numbness in his right leg. Although Sellers wouldn’t come right out and say that the bulging disc is the result of his dive into the stands after making an incredible catch two weeks ago, he acknowledged that his back has been hurting ever since. “A couple days after that I started feeling some light back symptoms, then it gradually got worse in Arizona,” said the 26-year-old Sellers. “It’s been hard for me to get comfortable when I sleep. I have to sleep on my side with a pillow between my legs. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and take a hot shower to relieve the pain but then it started to feel tingly on the right side of my leg so I knew something was wrong,” added the disappointed Sellers.
“We don’t think it’s too serious and think he’ll be back in a couple of weeks,” said Dodger manager Don Mattingly. “Once the inflammation subsides and the pressure on the nerve is gone, he’ll be good to go,” added Mattingly.
Sellers was replaced on the roster by super-sub Jerry Hairston Jr. who was activated from the DL today after successfully completing two re-hab starts at Triple-A Albuquerque. Although Hairston went 0 for 6 with the Isotopes, he played left field, shortstop and third base completely pain free. “I got some at bats and feel good,” said Hairston. “I just need to go out and play some baseball and get some at bats,” added the 35-year-old Hairston.
In other injury related news, manager Don Mattingly said that center fielder Matt Kemp with play two re-hab games at Albuquerque on Sunday and Monday and is scheduled to return to the line-up on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers at Dodger Stadium. Mattingly added that left fielder Juan Rivera will re-hab at Rancho Cucamonga and will probably return to the line-up a couple days after Kemp. “It was the best case scenario with Juan. When you hear rupture, you think the worst but this was the best case scenario we could have hoped for.”
