Since last Friday there have been some significant moves made in the Dodgers Minor League system. Our friend and resident farm watcher Harold Uhlman has been keeping us up to date on some of these moves which could very well impact the Big league club in the next few days. The rumblings started when the top closers in Low-A, High-A and Double-A were promoted up one level respectively as noted in Uhlman’s post on May 12th. While nothing has happened on the Big club since, speculation is that Todd Coffey will be replaced in the Dodger bullpen either by DFA or another suspicious trip to the DL. All of this, however, seems to have been put on the back burner, as all eyes will be on Matt Kemp’s MRI scheduled for later today (Monday).
Our friend Tony Jackson over at ESPN’s Dodgers Report blog has alerted us to a possible major move that may be in the works should Kemp’s MRI comeback unfavorably and land him on the DL. The move involves 27-year old Elian Herrera, an under-the-radar utility infielder/outfielder for the Isotopes who is having a great season thus far with the Dodgers’ Triple-A team. Jackson writes:
“Elian Herrera, who has mostly been playing second base at Triple-A Albuquerque but can play shortstop and is hitting .358 with a .381 on-base percentage and nine stolen bases in 12 attempts, may be headed for the majors, a source told ESPNLosAngeles.com on the condition of anonymity. A second source said late Sunday night that Herrera wasn’t headed to the majors ‘as of right now,’ which would seem to indicate Herrera is in a holding pattern of sorts while awaiting the results of an MRI exam that All-Star center fielder Matt Kemp is scheduled to undergo Monday on his left hamstring.
While all of this is pure speculation, it is something that definitely bears keeping a very close eye on in the coming days.
Stay tuned…
Could be a welcome move assuming Kemp needs time off to heal. Gordon could also use a shaking up, possibly to AAA to regain his stroke !!
I would prefer that Dee be put in the 8 hole for a while before sending him down to Triple-A. Then, if he still doesn’t get it together after a week or two, send him down for however long it takes for him to figure it out. Dee has all the talent in the world but perhaps the pressure of the lead-off spot is a bit too much for him right now. That said, there is an inherent flaw with this logic – Dee is struggling even when he doesn’t lead-off an inning, so your’s might be the only solution, MFGRREP.
