…Ivan De Jesus Jr. – the most recent of the ‘Cardiac Kids’ to arrive from Triple-A Albuquerque.
In yet another one run game and with the Dodgers down to their last out in the top of the 9th inning, the Dodgers ripped a page right out of the 2011 Arizona Diamondbacks’ book by yanking victory from the jaws of defeat in their last at-bats when Ivan De Jesus absolutely smoked a two-run double to deep center field on the very first pitch thrown by D-Backs closer J.J. Putz. Unfortunately for Putz, he left his four-seam fastball right over the middle of the plate and De Jesus didn’t miss the mistake pitch. It was Ivan’s first double since being called up last Saturday and his second and third RBIs.
With a daily line-up resembling a M.A.S.H. unit, it seems to be a different guy every night coming up with the game-changing (and game-winning) hit. On Sunday it was a three-run pinch hit home run by Scott Van Slyke; on Monday it was a clutch two-run home run by back-up catcher Matt Treanor and tonight it was De Jesus’ clutch two out two-run double.
Who will it be tomorrow? Who knows – but one thing is certain, the never-say-die 2012 Cardiac Kids will make it exciting, that’s for sure.
Putz (he can’t help it) has some pretty ugly stats for being their “closer”. When Gibson gave him the ball in the 9th, his stats were shown as he was warming up… and I had a feeling that Ethier was going to win the game. Obviously when that didn’t happen, I then thought that Putz would go right after DeJesus… which he did. The pitch didn’t miss by much, six inches maybe as Blanco setup on the outside part of the plate.
IDJ absolutely stung that pitch! I hope he adjusts whent the pitchers adjust to him…
They’re playing like champions. Like you say, every night it’s someone else coming up in the clutch. In all the years I’ve followed this team and we’ve had some great teams, I can’t remember them coming from behind and winning so often. Often more than once in a game.
They were out of so many games this year but they never gave up.
Even after blowing big leads, they still came back and won.
Like Van Slyke’s homer Sunday night, I couldn’t beleve my eyes after Ethier struck out, when I saw IDJ come through tonight. Matt Treanor last night and quite a few other games this year were simply remarkable victories.
Even a pessimist, like me, can feel hope.
