A late winter storm moving through Southern California is causing concern as to whether or not the Dodgers and Braves will get in the final game of their three-game series on Wednesday night. The Weather Channel is forecasting a 40% chance of rain Wednesday morning and afternoon increasing to a 70% chance Wednesday night.
Because this is the Braves’ only visit to Dodger Stadium this season, a rainout would force them to remain in Los Angeles overnight and play a makeup game at 1:10 PM on Thursday afternoon, a scheduled day off for both teams. There have only been 17 rain-outs at Dodger Stadium during it’s 50-year history, the last coming on April 17, 2000 against the Houston Astros.
MLB rules dictate that team officials (usually the managers) decide if a game is to be delayed or postponed up until the time that the official line-up cards are exchanged at home plate just prior to the first pitch. After that, the umpires make the decision if a game is to be delayed or postponed as conditions warrant.
Dodger Stadium Rainout Trivia
Rainouts are extremely rare at Dodger Stadium. In fact, prior to 1976, the Dodgers were rained out only once, against the St.Louis Cardinals, on April 21, 1967. That rainout ended a streak of 737 consecutive games without a postponement. The second home rainout, on April 12, 1976, ended a streak of 724 straight games. No rainouts occurred between April 21, 1988 and April 11, 1999 – a major league record of 856 straight home games without a rainout. April 21, 1988, was the last of three consecutive rainouts from April 19. That is the only time consecutive games have been rained out at Dodger Stadium. (Source: Wikipedia)
