I am convinced that anyone who has ever seen Rancho Cucamonga Quakes first baseman Chris Jacobs has asked themselves “What is this kid doing in a baseball uniform? He should be wearing a football uniform.” Jacobs (or Jake, as his teammates call him) stands 6-5 and weighs 257 (according to the Quakes roster) and has thighs the size of tree trunks. Jake put those tree trunks to good use on Saturday night as he helped lead the Quakes (the Dodgers High Single-A affiliate) to a 13-6 pounding of the Visalia Rawhide (the Diamondbacks High Single-A affiliate) at the Rancho Cucamonga Epicenter.
Jake, who is normally a first baseman but was the DH on Saturday night, went 4 for 4 with two home runs, a double, a single and ended the evening a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. His 5 RBIs and 3 runs helped lead the Quakes to a season-high 13 runs. Quakes first baseman Austin Gallagher added to the fray with a second inning grand slam home run, the first for the Quakes this season.
Quakes starting pitcher and top Dodger prospect Zach Lee picked up his first win of the young 2012 season giving up 3 earned runs on 10 hits (two of which were home runs) with no walks and 9 strikeouts in his 6.1 innings of work. Lee is now 1-1 on the season with a very impressive 2.95 ERA in the hitter-friendly High-A Cal League.
The Quakes are now 7-10 on the season and 3.5 games out of first place in the Cal League’s South Division.
