Perhaps it was nothing more than being homers, or perhaps nothing more than their frustration at their team having their asses handed to them (again) by a far superior Dodgers team, but when Atlanta Braves Fox South broadcasters Chip Caray and Joe Simpson went on their minute and a half rant blasting the apparel that Dodgers players wore during batting practice … batting practice … prior to Saturday night’s 5-1 shellacking of their team, it was, in every possible way, unprofessional, inappropriate, and uncalled for; and quite frankly, requires not only a full-blown apology to the Dodgers and their fans, but some type of punitive action by Major League Baseball.
“You know, I grew up in the Dodger organization, and certainly was taught how to play professional baseball and how to do things the right way,” Simpson said from atop his soapbox to his broadcast partner. “I want you to look at some things going on today at batting practice here with the Dodgers. What do you see? You see t-shirts, you see Chase Utley with no socks, pants up over his knees, a t-shirt. This was prevalent with their whole team. Won’t someone please think of the fans?”
Not being one to miss an opportunity to also step on his … tongue, Caray felt obligated to chime in.
“And if I were a Dodger fan, I’d be embarrassed. And I don’t know how Major League Baseball allows such attire when the gates are open and fans are watching,” Caray said. “Chase Utley, I’ve had nothing but respect for him his whole career, I think he’s a great player, I thought he always played the game the right way. That was an embarrassment, what he had on during batting practice.”
Well guess what, you morons? What Chase Utley “had on during batting practice” was a t-shirt promoting awareness and to raise much-needed charitable funds to fight childhood cancer.
“I take it personally when someone questions our professionalism,” a visibly angry Dave Roberts told reporters, when informed of what Simpson and Caray had said about his team during their Fox Sports South television broadcast.
As comedian Ron White might say about Chip Caray and Joe Simpson’s ridiculous rant:
“You can’t fix stupid.”

UPDATED: July 29, 2018 at 6:00 pm (PT) – On Sunday morning, Braves broadcaster Joe Simpson reportedly personally apologized to Chase Utley and Dave Roberts for his comments the night before:
I’ve been listening to Chip Carey and Joe Simpson during the telecasts shown on MLB-Extra Innings the last few night’s, but last night the Dodger game on MLB-Network was broadcast by the Dodger broadcasting team, so I missed the Braves broadcast last night. I’m a little sorry that I did.
Click on the top photo, Joe … like it says.
I hope members of the Dodgers broadcast crew and journalist tell Simpson and Carey about their unprofessional “reporting.”
Apparently Simpson met with Ulley and Roberts pregame this morning.
Simpson broadcast watched by hundreds of thousands — apology should have come on-air
They said we couldn’t tell who the players were without names on their shirts. He may have a point. Ever since Matt Kemp came back I’ve kept mixing him up with JT.
The quotes you attribute to Caray in the article were not his. That was all Simpson just digging himself a deeper hole.
